A representative for Britney Spears is speaking out after the pop star’s arrest.
The “Gimme More” singer, 44, was arrested on suspicion of a DUI in Ventura, Calif., on Wednesday evening, per PEOPLE. She was released early this morning, according to Ventura County Sheriff's Office arrest records.
"This was an unfortunate incident that is completely inexcusable,” Spears’ rep said in a statement to PEOPLE. “Britney is going to take the right steps and comply with the law and hopefully this can be the first step in long overdue change that needs to occur in Britney’s life.”

They also expressed their hope that Spears “can get the help and support she needs during this difficult time” from those around her. "Her boys are going to be spending time with her,” the rep continued. “Her loved ones are going to come up with an overdue needed plan to set her up for success for well being."
Spears is the mother of two children — sons Sean Preston, 20, and Jayden James, 19 – whom she welcomed with her ex-husband, Kevin Federline.
Representatives for Spears did not immediately respond to Entertainment Weekly’s request for comment.

This isn’t Spears’ first run-in with the law. The singer previously faced four misdemeanor charges after she got into an alleged hit-and-run accident with a parked car in Los Angeles in 2007. The charges were ultimately dropped after Spears paid the vehicle’s owner for the damages.
She was subsequently placed under a conservatorship from 2008 until 2021.
The music icon made headlines last month for selling her entire music catalog to publisher Primary Wave for around $200 million, EW learned.
