Daniel Radcliffe is sending good luck to Dominic McLaughlin, the young Scottish actor playing the title role in HBO's new Harry Potter series

The 36-year-old, who famously played the wizard in the film adaptations, told producers of the new series that he wanted to write to the new Harry to "congratulate him and wish him luck"

Filming for the new series began last summer, with the first season expected to air in 2027

Daniel Radcliffe has some encouraging words for Dominic McLaughlin, the young Scottish actor set to step into the role of Harry Potter.

In a recent interview with Comicbook, the English actor, 36, says he told producers of the new Harry Potter series that he wanted to reach out to whoever they cast as Harry in the HBO television reboot.

"They contacted me just before they were announced. They let us know they were about to announce them. All I did was say, 'I would love to write the boy playing Harry. When you have his name, if you could send me his name… I don’t need anything in advance, just let me know when it is appropriate to write to him to congratulate him and wish him luck,' " said Radcliffe.

Radcliffe was cast as the powerful young wizard Harry Potter in the original film franchise based on the series of fantasy books by J.K. Rowling at just 11 years old. He went on to play Harry in eight films spanning from 2001 to 2011. He starred alongside Rupert Grint as Ron Weasley and Emma Watson as Hermione Granger. The popular film series launched the trio's careers.

The stage and screen star told PEOPLE last week that he's spoken to his former costars about the buzzy new series, with the trio reflecting on "how surreal [it is] to watch people starting off on that journey, all those years later,"

"It's one of those where I think we all just know how the others feel, because we're also feeling it," Radcliffe said. "You just see the pictures of these kids, and you just want to grab them and hug them. That's the impulse that I think that we, mainly, all have."

Warner Bros. Discovery first announced plans for a new Harry Potter series in April 2023, with each new season focusing on a single book from the series, mirroring the film franchise.

Along with McLaughlin's Harry, Arabella Stanton will play Hermione and Alastair Stout will play Ron. The TV adaptation also features established actors, including John Lithgow stepping into the role of Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Professor Minerva McGonagall and Paapa Essiedu as Professor Severus Snape. The series is scheduled to premiere on HBO in the United States with an early 2027 release date.

Radcliffe further told the outlet that other than wanting to reach out to McLaughlin, he hasn't kept up much with casting news.

"I’m very happy there’s going to be a whole other group of people to field the answers to Harry Potter questions. I am going to start passing those questions over in a few years," the Emmy nominee said.

The Tony Award winner is currently trying his hand at comedy in the new NBC sitcom, The Fall & Rise of Reggie Dinkins. Radcliffe stars as Arthur Tobin, a struggling director who decides to make a documentary about disgraced football player Reggie Dinkins (Played by Tracy Morgan), in an attempt to rehabilitate Reggie's public image.

Speaking to PEOPLE about working with Morgan, 57, the actor said, "Every day, he's going to say five of the craziest things you've ever heard, but also be incredibly kind and generous and funny."
