Hellbound's Yoo Ah-in set for big-screen comeback following hiatus over alleged drug use

Hellbound and Burning star Yoo Ah-in is set to return to acting with a new occult thriller. As per the Korea JoongAng Daily, the Korean actor was accused of illegally using drugs such as marijuana and propofol. In 2024, he was sentenced to 1 year in prison.

Since the drug use scandal, this new Korean film will mark the star's comeback to the entertainment industry. The mystery-occult thriller, Vampir (Literal title), will be directed by Exhuma director Jang Jae-hyun. Ah-in will be joined by an A-list ensemble cast, which includes veteran actor Lee Sung-min and Love Scout and Mercy for None star Lee Jun-hyuk.

Everything to know about Yoo Ah-in's comeback film Vampir

As per Soompi, the synopsis of the occult thriller reads:

"Vampir follows a mysterious occult story about an unidentified contract killer who, at the request of a clergyman, pursues an enigmatic pagan group."

Yoo Ah-in is set to play the lead in the K-movie and portray the character of a contract killer. According to Soompi, the new mission given to Ah-in's contract killer about following a pagan group ultimately changes him as he witnesses "bizarre entities".

Along with the Hellbound star, Vampir also includes Mercy for None and Stranger star Lee Jun-hyuk, who will portray the character of a pagan and Lee Sung-min, who plays the clergyman who hires Yoo Ah-in. Other big names in the cast include Choi Hyun-wook from Weak Hero and Twinkling Watermelon, who will play a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army. He will be joined by Agent Kim Reactivated star Yoon Kyung-ho, who plays a smuggler.

As per the Korea JoongAng Daily, the upcoming film will begin filming next month and is expected to be released in 2028.

According to reports, Yoo Ah-in was accused in 2023 of illegal drug use. After an 11-month trial, the Korean actor was sentenced to 1 year in prison and fined 2 million won in 2024. Due to the accusations, the actor had to step away from his superhit Netflix K-drama, Hellbound, after 1 Season. He was replaced in the second Season of the K-drama.

While Vampir marks Ah-in's return to acting, it has also divided audiences, as the actor is still on probation. As reported by The Chosun Daily, some netizens are reportedly criticizing the star's comeback as he is still on probation until 2027, while another section appears to be looking forward to the K-movie, applauding and agreeing that Ah-in fits perfectly in Director Jang's "occult" universe.
