Jenna Ortega is giving new meaning to the concept of method dressing. Attending a screening of her upcoming film Klara and the Sun at the Rome Film Festival on October 16, the actress wore a dress that nodded to the circular design of the film poster. And as it turns out, while the dress may look custom made for the film, it was actually pulled from the archives and dates back 60 years.

Styled by Enrique Melendez, Ortega opted for a classic mod moment with one of Pierre Cardin’s iconic “Target” dresses from his 1966 collection. The white shift dress featured a straight silhouette with an asymmetrical target on one side featuring huge color blocking circles in red, yellow and black. The mod design was a subtle nod not only to the film’s poster, but also the cover of the Kazuo Ishiguro novel. She paired the minidress with white heels and wore her hair in a ‘60s-coded center-parted updo. She completed the look with a swipe of bright red lipstick and a white manicure to match her dress.

Ortega stars as the titular Klara in the adaptation of Ishiguro’s novel. Klara is an “artificial friend” who joins a family to provide companionship for a young girl.
As Ortega noted while speaking to AP News, Klara marks a big tonal shift from her usual gothic characters, such as the titular spooky teen in Netflix’s Wednesday. “I think she’s the happiest character I’ve ever played,” she said. “I think the biggest challenge was maybe tonally relishing and making the most of the opportunity that [director] Taika [Waititi] brings with his humor, which is to go as big as possible. You don’t really get to do that on jobs in a dramatic film. But then also making sure that the serious moments were still hitting the way that they should.
