Kacey Musgraves is working with "everyone's favorite gangster great-grandpa" once again.
In a new interview with Zane Lowe for Apple Music, the Grammy-winning country star, 37, opened up about why she loves working with Willie Nelson, who's featured on the song "Uncertain, TX" from her upcoming Middle of Nowhere album.
"Anytime I can have everyone's favorite gangster great-grandpa on anything. I mean, I love him so much. He's the patriarch of truth, country music," said Musgraves. "He brings so many different kinds of people together, which is one thing I really love about him, and he's just incredible. I feel very lucky. This is our third time collaborating together."
Musgraves and Nelson, 93, have performed live together on several occasions in the past and released multiple collaborations: "Are You Sure" from her Pageant Material album and "A Willie Nice Christmas" from her A Very Kacey Christmas album.

The "High Horse" singer spoke about what it's like getting in the studio with Nelson, noting that he only requires one take for a recording. "He walks in, does the take, and literally, that's it. So it better work. He's like, 'I'm in my 90s... I'm giving you 30 seconds, and then I'm out,'" she explained. "I f---ing get it. He's earned that. He's a true American legend, transcends space and time. He's amazing."
Musgraves also discussed her experience "in a recreational smoking situation with Willie Nelson," especially now that she doesn't partake in as much marijuana "as I used to."
"I had to take a pause," she said. "I just started getting really anxious. And I was like, why do I feel so paranoid and crazy? Like, I just need to kind of back off. But then the more you back off, like the less you smoke, the more it affects you, obviously."
That being said, Musgraves noted, "You got to be really careful" smoking with Nelson. "You're just like, I don't know how to form sentences anymore. My motor skills are completely gone," she explained.
Middle of Nowhere is set for a May 1 release, and the project features additional collaborations with Gregory Alan Isakov, Billy Strings and Miranda Lambert.
