Kirk Cameron ā€œapologized to Godā€ after filming a scene in the 2008 Christian drama Fireproof.

Cameron has an argument with costar Erin Bethea in the scene, which made him so ā€œuncomfortableā€ that he remembers ā€œapologizing to Godā€ immediately after.

ā€œI should never speak to anyone that way, let alone my wife, even if it’s just an on-screen wife,ā€ he explained.

Acting isn’t all play-pretend to Kirk Cameron.

The Growing Pains star and Christian evangelist has been looking back on his filmography, prior to and following his conversion to Christianity in the late 1980s. In a video titled ā€œI Apologized to God After Filming This Sceneā€ that Cameron shared to his YouTube account in July, the actor revisited the 2008 Christian marital drama Fireproof, which stirred up a lot of feelings.

ā€œI often wonder what my kids think of this when they watch the movie now and they see me playing married to some other woman, and then me yelling and screaming like I’m right about to,ā€ he said, before rolling a clip from the film, in which he and costar Erin Bethea engage in a heated argument. Though the film ultimately tells a story of reconciliation, Cameron appealed directly to a higher power after shooting the intense argument scene.

ā€œI’ve never talked like that to my wife, to their mom,ā€ Cameron explained. ā€œIt actually made me super uncomfortable to even do this, particularly as someone who believes that you’re to honor your wife; in fact, the director got upset with me that I wasn’t angry enough in this scene until I reached this level.ā€

Cameron then played another scene from the film, which sees him and Bethea’s characters, the unhappily married Caleb and Catherine Holt, spat over bills, chores, child care, and work woes. The end of the scene finds Caleb shouting in Catherine’s face.

ā€œMan, that is so uncomfortable for me to watch. And boy, my sons would drop me if they ever saw me speak to my wife that way,ā€ the actor continued. ā€œI remember actually apologizing to God after doing that.ā€

Cameron explained that he felt obliged to seek absolution for the act, simulated though it may have been, ā€œbecause I should never speak to anyone that way, let alone my wife, even if it’s just an on-screen wife. I hoped that I hadn’t raised my own emotional ceiling to where that would affect the way that I responded to my real wife in real life.ā€

The actor is serious about the vows he made to his wife and fellow Growing Pains star, Chela Noble, whom he married in 1991. Cameron revealed in 2008 that he had Noble act as Bethea’s body double on the Fireproof set during kissing scenes, because of his ā€œcommitment not to kiss any other woman,ā€ per Fox News.

Cameron and Noble share six children, four of them adopted. He and Noble became grandparents in 2024 when their daughter Ahna gave birth to her first child.

ā€œOur hearts are filled to overflowing. Our beautiful baby girl just had a beautiful baby girl, and we can hardly wait to spend every minute with her and shower her with love,ā€ he wrote on Instagram at the time. Welcome to the world, Maya Jeanne Noble Bower. May God bless and protect you always!ā€
