If youâre wondering what big spin Mike Flanagan will bring to his long-gestating Dark Tower TV series, it sounds like he wonât have one.
On a recent episode of the Process Unlocked series, he mentioned potentially cracking the code for this show. âYou do the books,â he said, which is probably funny to a lot of people at the moment. As his recent Carrieseries has shown, not all his adaptations stick close to the source material, and Nicolaj Arcelâs 2017 Dark Tower film infamously took liberties that didnât please fans.

But with this one, Flanagan said heâs hoping to tell the story by âjust doing them, and in orderâ via five TV seasons and two standalone movies. While he sure âenjoys the remixing and taking something apart,â he considers Tower an âincredibly dauntingâ task. Because of that, heâs aiming to keep things true to the page, because Stephen King âstarts this giant worldbuilding, potentially overwhelming story with two people in a landscape without detail. Itâs the simplest start.â
ââThe man in black fled across the desert and the gunslinger followed,'â he continued, quoting the first Dark Towerâs opening line. âItâs two characters; thereâs a clear objective. One is running away, one is pursuing, and itâs a desert. [âŠ] King did it right.â Whatever âlittle changesâ are made, Flanagan has that setup as his guide and knows it, since he said â70%â of his job has already been handled by King.
At the moment, Dark Tower fans will have to wait for Flanaganâs schedule to clear up so he can get on adapting the books. Itâs not just the future of Carriehe has to think about; The Exorcist: Martyrs hits theaters next year, and heâs also helping Henry Cavill bring Warhammer 40Kto Prime Video, too.
