Kunis says their long history fosters trust and ease as they navigate life's changes together

Mila Kunis is sharing the secret to the success of her marriage — and it's something that might be hard for others to replicate.

While appearing on a Monday, June 22 episode of The Drew Barrymore Show, the actress, 42, opened up about her relationship with husband Ashton Kutcher. Kunis, who first met her partner while the two were filming That 70's Show as teenagers, shared that she thinks their marriage has been easier because of they grew up together.

"I mean, I married my best friend. But to back it up, when we reconnected, I was 27. And I was a very different person than I was when I was 25, let alone when I was 21 or 19," Kunis began. "You go through different changes and you evolve. Hopefully you grow, you become different."

"But he knew me through all of them, and I knew him through all of it, through like the good, the bad, the ugly, you know, and vice versa," Kunis said of Kutcher, 48. "So when we reconnected, there was no getting to know each other, there was no, 'But let me tell you all these hidden secrets.' "

She went on to say that there's "nothing to hide" between the two of them.

"Our fundamentals, our foundation, everything is built on respect because we've known each other since I was 14 and he was 19," continued Kunis. She explained that because the two have known each other for so long, it's been easier to transition into different stages of life.

"[It's seeing that] people can grow and evolve. It's also just knowing that at all moments in our lives, we will be able to grow together because we already have," she added. "And so, there's an ease about it. And there's a trust behind it."

"He's not going to go, 'Well, that's not the person I married.' He'll be like, 'Okay, let's go for a ride,' " the mom of two said.

The couple married on July 4, 2015 in a ceremony held at the Secret Garden at Parrish Ranch in Oak Glen, Calif. Kunis and Kutcher's relationship first began in 2012, years after they met as costars on the set of That '70s Show in 1998. The two went on to welcome daughter Wyatt, 11, and son Dimitri, 9.

On the WTF with Marc Maron podcast in 2018, Kunis said there were "no feelings whatsoever" between them during their time making That '70s Show together.

"It's the weirdest story that nobody believes, but it's the God's honest truth," the Luckiest Girl Alive actress said. "You know, he and I talk about it and we're like, 'God.' "

"Had we connected [in the past] would we have connected? No," she continued. "The people that we were back then would never be together. But it's just such a bummer that we missed out on 20 years together. I look back and I think, 'We could have spent 20 years together.' "
