Like his Modern Family character Mitchell Pritchett, actorJesse Tyler Ferguson is devoted to his family.
On the December 29 episode of his Sony Music Entertainment podcast, Dinner's On Me, Ferguson noted that he and his husband, Justin Mikita's oldest child, Beckett Mercer, "started kindergarten" during the summer of 2025. He explained that he wasn't initially involved with his son's kindergarten drop-off because he was "doing Shakespeare in the Park [in New York] this summer." He said he had an emotional response the first time he dropped off Beckett at his kindergarten class.
"I wasn't prepared for him to open up the door and just walk out, and like walk to class by himself. And seeing his little body walk away with this huge backpack on his back, I started crying. It was too much for me ... It killed me," said the actor on his podcast.

Ferguson and Mikita, who wed in 2013, also have a 3-year-old son, Sullivan "Sully" Louis. In a December 28 Instagram upload, Ferguson shared he took his sons to see Aubrey Anderson-Emmons, who played Mitchell's daughter, Lily, on Modern Family, in a stage production of The Wizard of Oz at a theater in Thousand Oaks, California. The pictures showed Ferguson posing with his on-screen daughter while backstage.
In the caption of the post, Ferguson complimented Anderson-Emmons for her performance as the musical's lead character, Dorothy Gale.
"Took my two kids to see my other kid @aubreyandersonemmons in THE WIZARD OF OZ. I love cheering on all my kiddos. Aubrey was the most gorgeous Dorothy, of course! So so proud of you. Love you," read a portion of the caption.
Anderson-Emmons replied to Ferguson's message in the post's comments section.
"Thank you for coming Jesse!!" wrote the 18-year-old.
Modern Family ended after an 11-season run in 2020.
