True Detective has officially found its next true detectives.
HBO announced that Nicolas Cage and Antonio Banderas will headline season 5 of the acclaimed crime anthology series. The show will begin production in 2027.
Cage will play a character named Henry Logan, while Banderas’ character is named Rai García. Both actors will also executive produce the season.
Cage previously announced his intention to join the series last week at New York Comic Con. “Feed the family; don’t do too many movies back to back to back. So I think I’m probably gonna do another season of television. I think I might do a season of True Detective,” he said. “That’s okay that I’m the first to announce that, right?”
However, Cage’s deal to join the show was not officially finalized until this week.

Entertainment Weekly has reached out to representatives for Cage and Banderas for more information.
True Detective kicked off with its acclaimed first season in 2012, with McConaughey and Harrelson as the central investigators. 2015’s Season 2 saw Colin Farrell, Rachel McAdams, and Taylor Kitsch play law enforcement officers entangled with a career criminal played by Vince Vaughn, while 2019’s season 3 starred Mahershala Ali as the primary detective with Stephen Dorff, Carmen Ejogo, Scoot McNairy, and Ray Fisher in supporting roles.
The show eventually returned five years later in 2024 with López taking over showrunning reins from Pizzolatto. Season 4 starred Jodie Foster and Kali Reis as the main detectives.
