Prince Harry has revealed that his son, Prince Archie, once tried to talk his way out of maths. The 7-year-old had one very specific request about school, and it did not go the way he hoped. The Duke of Sussex has now told the funny story himself while interacting with children outside the Community Recording Studio (CRS) in Nottingham, marking his and Meghan Markle‘s first joint engagement since returning to the UK.

Prince Harry’s son Prince Archie didn’t want Maths at school, but it didn’t quite work out

Prince Harry shared the anecdote while chatting with children outside the Community Recording Studio (CRS) in Nottingham, as per a video posted on Instagram. The stop was the first engagement of the day for the Sussexes. He opened by asking the children whether they liked maths, then offered his own observation. “Most people don’t like math,” he said.

His son, it seems, belongs in that camp. He revealed that his son, Archie, once turned to him with a hopeful question: “Can I go to a school that doesn’t do math?” Unfortunately for the 7-year-old, there was no sugar-coating the reply. Such a school, Prince Harry told him, “doesn’t exist.”

Then came the first day of his new school. In the very first class, the timetable delivered exactly what Archie had hoped to dodge. “Guess what it was?” Prince Harry asked, before answering himself: “Math.”

The story also offers a glimpse into the family life of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s kids, and how little moments like these become relatable for people everywhere. Throughout the video, Prince Harry keeps the mood relaxed and friendly by engaging with the children. He greets them with a steady stream of hellos and asks for their names.

He also checks whether they’re enjoying themselves before commenting on the weather and asking if they’re glad the sun is still shining in October. One child says they would rather have snow, then adds that it is too hot. Harry replies that snow might come in time, although snow in October “might freak a few people out.” He also notices their school fleeces, remarking that they look nice.
