Prince Harry and King Charles III have had one of the most strained relationships inside the British royal family for years. Now, the door appears to be opening again as tensions have thawed after their exit as working royals over six years ago.
After Harry, Meghan Markle and their children travelled to the U.K. in July, Harry met with Charles at Highgrove House in a long-awaited reunion that also included Queen Camilla.
It was the first time Charles had reportedly seen Meghan and his grandchildren in four years, and now he appears to be reaching out to his youngest son.
Harry’s relationship with Charles is changing
Harry has been invited to stay at Buckingham Palace when he returns to Britain for the WellChild Awards in September, reports RadarOnline.
What makes this invitation particularly significant is that in July, the palace accommodation plan for the Sussexes fell through, leaving Harry and Meghan staying at Althorp House, which was the family estate of Princess Diana.
Now, the invitation is being seen as a major opening for Harry. A source told the outlet that Harry sees the opportunity as potentially his last chance to repair his relationship with his father and rebuild his place within the royal family.
“Harry may never get a better window of opportunity,” the source said.
They added, “He’s desperate to see Charles as much as he possibly can, and is very pleased he’s being welcomed back.”
After Harry and Meghan left London for the United States, they painted the royal family in a bad light and went against the agreement they made when they exited the monarchy. Tensions rose between the family when the Sussexes gave interviews and Harry wrote a book where he lambasted his family.
Now staying at the palace may be the only way for him to try and reach his dad again, and there is one particular detail that stands out about the invitation.
Harry reportedly wants more than a family reunion
According to the source, Prince Harry would like to find a way to work for the royal family in some capacity. That would be a 180 degree turn for the prince who stepped back from royal duties with Meghan in 2020 and subsequently moved across the pond.

Harry has since spoken publicly about his relationship with his family, including his strained relationship with Charles. His memoir, Spare, also contained deeply personal accounts of life inside the monarchy and his relationship with his brother, Prince William.
Now, the reported Palace invitation arrives as Harry’s position inside the family is fundamentally different from the one he left.
Charles is king and William is heir to the throne.
Harry would not be returning as the younger prince who once stood behind his brother in the line of succession while carrying out official royal duties which would make his reported desire for a role more complicated.
The Radar source also claimed Harry is conscious of the changing royal structure and wants to remain as present as possible for his father.
“The royals are in the process of fine-tuning certain roles within The Firm,” the insider stated, before continuing, “Harry is well aware of that, and he’s making moves accordingly.”
They also claimed that the Sussexes have lost millions in legal fees, and are feeling financial pressure. The source said that they “need a Hail Mary to sustain their current lifestyle.”
Charles has been in cancer treatment since 2024, and Harry wants “to keep up the momentum.”
“His goal is to be as present as he can be for his dad, and he knows this is his last chance.”
