Sebastian Stan has pushed back on what he called “naive” labelling of his new film, Fjord, as “conservative.”
He stars in Cristian Mungiu’s Palme D’Or-winning movie alongside Renate Reinsve. The pair play a Christian couple who immigrate from Romania to Norway with their five children. The progressive local community initially welcomes the family, but they soon clash when their traditional beliefs are increasingly scrutinised.

Speaking to The Independent about why the movie may resonate with international audiences, Stan said: “Families are being torn apart all over the world. I think it's very limiting and sort of naive when the film gets labelled as this word ‘conservative’, because it's so much more than that.
“This idea about immigrants coming to a different country, having a set of values... We want to respect their culture and their history, but at the same time, we want them to not be different and fit in and be the same. Guess what? It's not one or the other.”
