Sinners’s Wunmi Mosaku Looked Regal in Royal Blue at the BAFTA Awards

Wunmi Mosaku stunned on the red carpet at the BAFTAs today. The Sinners star, who is nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her turn as Annie, the Hoodoo healer and estranged wife of Michael B. Jordan’s Smoke, looked regal in royal blue fringe.

The actress’s one-shoulder gown by Ahluwalia featured alternating swathes of fringe, creating a fan-like texture that nodded toward flapper style while staying impeccably modern. She completed the look with hoop earrings and silver heeled sandals.

Fashion played an important role in Mosaku’s connection to Annie. As she shared on the Prestige Junkie podcast. “I felt like I really found her through the costumes, the dialect work, the relationship with Michael,” Mosaku says. “I had done research on Hoodoo, but it didn’t feel vivid until I was in Louisiana, until I met Hoodoo practitioners, until I was in the world. Going to Haus of Hoodoo, just being around priestesses, I was like, no, I’m getting it now.”

In fact, director Ryan Coogler had specifically written the role with her in mind, though she didn’t discover that fact, she explained, until the end of the casting process.

This year’s nomination marks Mosaku’s third BAFTA nod—she previously got the nod in 2021 for His House as Lead Actress and won Best Supporting in 2017 for Damilola, Our Beloved Boy. She’s also nominated this year for her Sinners portrayal in the Best Supporting Actress category at the Oscars, her first-ever nod.

The Oscars commendation has been bittersweet for Mosaku, who told the Times of London that world events have prevented her from being able to fully enjoy the moment. “It’s difficult to hold both the nomination and the news because one feels beautiful and one is so dark and heavy; truly dystopian — how can I possibly go out and buy some drinks and enjoy the moment?”
