Tony Shalhoub is stepping into his literary era with his new book

Co-written with his daughter Josie Adams, We Thought They'd Never Leave: Musings on Food and Family is a love letter to both

The book will arrive this fall

When Tony Shalhoub and his daughter Josie Adams first set out to write a book together, it was intended as a family cookbook. But as they shared stories alongside favorite recipes, "before I knew it, we had created something closer to a memoir," the Marvelous Mrs. Maisel actor tells PEOPLE.

What resulted is We Thought They'd Never Leave: Musings on Food and Family, forthcoming this fall from Gallery Books. Billed as "a delightful narrative of nostalgic remembrances and recollections about gathering at the family table," the book gathers "delightful stories, memories and recipes to create this timely, feel-good collection," according to the book's official synopsis.

“Working with her was the best part," Shalhoub tells PEOPLE, of creating the book with Adams. "She helped turn decades of recipes and stories into something coherent. Writing it all down—really archiving those memories—meant a great deal to me."

"It’s more than a cookbook; it’s a love letter to my family, the traditions and recipes that define us, and the reunion my parents started over 50 years ago," the Monk actor continues. "If it captures even a little of the noise and affection of that one chaotic week each year, I’ll be happy.”

Written with his daughter, Josie Adams, writer, producer and founder of House of Water, the book is a "humorous and heartfelt portrait of place, family and food" that centers around the annual Shalhoub summer reunion in Door County, Wisc.— a tradition that gathers together 10 siblings, their children and their children’s children, carrying decades of shared history with them.

For her part, working on We Thought They'd Never Leave was a way to preserve her family's stories before it's too late, Adams tells PEOPLE.

“I’ve wanted to do this book with my dad for a long time—partly because I love our family’s food, but mostly because I didn’t want the stories to slip away," she explains. "Getting to work on this with him was incredibly meaningful. It gave me a chance to see him not just as my dad, but as the child of my grandparents, the brother to my aunts and uncles."

True to form, the book features "rich vignettes drawn from his parents, his siblings and the many summers spent crowded around long tables," the book's synopsis promises. "Tony reflects on the meals, mishaps and small moments that link one generation to the next—from his childhood in a lively Lebanese-American household in Green Bay to the beautiful, chaotic gatherings that continue today. Along the way, he includes several family recipes that have stood the test of time."

And as it makes its way toward shelves, Adams is graceful for the process that brought it here. "Working with your parent in that way is something I feel profoundly grateful for," she says. "We love to talk—and this book is really a continuation of that. I’m so happy we get to put those stories into the world.”

The book its publisher calls "part memoir and part family-history—full of games, gatherings and Shalhoub lore," also features 20 recipes, as it invites readers into "the kind of loud, affectionate, ever-growing family reunion that somehow always makes room for one more at the table."
