There are few sci-fi shows as beloved as *Firefly*, the space Western from divisive geek icon Joss Whedon. It lasted only one season, but fan demand (hey, you can’t stop the signal) led to *Serenity*, a big-screen 2005 sequel that wrapped up the show.
Now, more than two decades, these Big Damn Heroes are returning for an animated series that will be set between the events of the series and *Serenity*. As we wait for that project to materialize, why not catch up with the stars who created one of the best sci-fi series ever made?
Just where is the cast of *Firefly* now, and where else can you find these actors giving shiny performances? Keep reading to find out.
Nathan Fillion (Malcolm Reynolds)

Nathan Fillion played Mal, a former freedom fighter who evolved into a Han Solo-style smuggler.
“Every day I was doing something so great,” he told ** in 2011. “I might be biased, but I think something like *Firefly *rises above fanaticism. I think it touches people in their hearts. It makes them feel, and it makes them feel something good. I feel it, too.”
Though his time as this space Western’s swaggering hero lasted just a single season, it did launch his decades-long TV legacy as a leading man. He spent eight years as a crime-solving author on *Castle*, and later donned duty blues to police the streets on *The Rookie*.
In between starring roles, he’s never been short of work. Two decades ago, up-and-coming filmmaker James Gunn cast Fillion in his splattery horror-comedy *Slither *(2006). They went on to collaborate on *Super *(2010), multiple *Guardians of the Galaxy* installments, and *The Suicide Squad *(2021).
More recently, Fillion took on a meaty role as mop-topped Lantern Corps rebel Guy Gardner in Gunn’s *Superman* (2025). The Canadian actor will reprise that role on the small screen on HBO’s *Lanterns*.
Gina Torres (Zoe Washburne)

Gina Torres played Mal’s former military buddy and second-in-command, Zoë, who wound up falling for (and marrying) the ship’s pilot.
The veteran actress says the show’s crew has consistently kept in touch over the years.
“The cast of *Firefly* has continued to have our own little text message thread," she told EW in 2022. "We really are each other's friends and allies and cheerleaders."
They’ve had plenty to cheer for with Torres’ career. She played an infamous Big Bad on *Angel*, suited up for a long run on the legal drama *Suits*, and landed a small but important part on HBO’s *Westworld*. On the big screen, she had a key supporting role in the first two *Matrix *sequels.
More recently, the New York native scored a network hit opposite Rob Lowe on the paramedic drama *9-1-1: Lone Star*. She’s currently in the cast of the Patrick Dempsey crime drama *Memory of a Killer*.
Torres has one daughter from her marriage to ex-husband Laurence Fishburne. She played his wife on a handful of episodes of *Hannibal*.

Alan Tudyk played the wisecracking pilot Wash, who has *almost* as much loyalty to his captain as he does to his wife, the *Serenity*’s first mate.
Tudyk told *Rolling Stone *he was originally hesitant to take the role, simply because he didn’t know what to expect.
“I can’t audition to go be in a show for seven years… with just two pages of information about it,” he said, adding that he asked an industry friend for advice. “I was like, ‘Should I do this?’ And he said, ‘Who’s doing it?’ I said, ‘Joss Whedon,’ [and he said] ‘Do it, do it. You gotta do it!’”
Known at the time for his scene-stealing part in *A Knight’s Tale *(2001), Tudyk found a devoted fandom through *Firefly *and went on to book *Dodgeball *(2004), *3:10 to Yuma *(2007), and *Tucker and Dale vs. Evil *(2010).
These days, Tudyk is one of the most successful voice actors on the planet. From Disney hits like *Wreck-It-Ralph *(2012) and *Frozen *(2013) to live-action robots in *I, Robot *(2004), *Rogue One *(2016), and *Superman*, his voice has been a pop-culture mainstay for ages now.
Back in the flesh, he headlined the sci-fi sitcom *Resident Alien *for four acclaimed seasons.
The Texas native has been married to choreographer Charissa Barton since 2016.

Jewel Staite’s Kaylee ran the ship — or, rather, kept the ship running as the *Serenity*’s trusty mechanic.
“I was in the right place at the right time and got lucky enough to be chosen to play the farm girl spaceship mechanic,” she said in 2019. “Kaylee in particular was such a warmhearted little charmer, a girly girl who also loved machines, complicated and multi-layered, like all women are. She was the type of person you wanted to be best friends with.”
The British Columbia native, who began her career as a child actress in various Canada-based TV productions, said *Firefly *“opened a lot of doors,” including helping her land on *Stargate: Atlantis*. She later appeared in the third and fourth seasons of AMC’s *The Killing *and reunited with Tudyk for a four-episode arc on *Resident Alien*.
In recent years, the Canadian actress scored a homegrown hit as the star of *Family Law*.
Staite has been married to entrepreneur Charlie Ritchie since 2016. They have one son.
Morena Baccarin (Inara Serra)

Morena Baccarin’s Inara was a Companion, a by-appointment-only escort for the rich and powerful. Meanwhile, she and Mal shared a palpable sexual tension.
The actress has offered a theory as to why this show was so beloved. In addition to being “ahead of its time” as network sci-fi, “[Whedon] did it in a way that was realistic — there were no aliens or people with five heads — it was just people in the new frontier."
Baccarin has been a small-screen fixture ever since, with leading roles on *V *and *Homeland, *the latter of which earned her an Emmy nomination . She made multiple forays into comic-book fandom, first as Arkham’s own Dr. Thompkins on *Gotham* and later as Wade Wilson’s beloved Vanessa in *Deadpool *(2016) and its sequels.
The Rio de Janeiro native had further big-screen success in *Greenland *(2020), and will next be seen in *Masters of the Universe *(2026). She currently headlines the CBS procedural *Sheriff Country*, a spinoff of *Fire Country*.
Baccarin married her *Gotham *costar Ben McKenzie in 2017. They have two children. She also has a son from a previous marriage.
Adam Baldwin (Jayne Cobb)

Adam Baldwin played the muscle and the attitude as the maverick mercenary, Jayne. His character always threw himself into danger, if only in pursuit of individual fortune and glory.
A perennial tough-guy actor going back to his ’Nam days in *Full Metal Jacket *(1987), Baldwin appeared in *Independence Day *(1996) and *The Patriot *(2000) before joining *Firefly*.
The Illinois native went on to snag main roles on *Chuck* and *The Last Ship*. He’s also reunited with his former crewmates by guesting on episodes of Fillion’s *Castle* and Torres’ *9-1-1: Lone Star*.
Baldwin has been married to his wife, Ami Julius, since 1988. They have three children.
Summer Glau (River Tam)

In just her second onscreen role, Summer Glau was River, a gifted young woman with special powers thanks to creepy government experiments. (Or, to put it in River’s own blunt terms, “I can kill you with my brain.”)
Glau says she always felt a special connection to her breakout character. In a 2018 interview, she said it “was the perfect role for me in my life at that moment.” As a young actor trying to make it big, she explained, she understood a character who was “a little removed, a little out of her element, vulnerable, a little of a live wire.”
The Texas native scored a lead role as a reprogrammed cyborg opposite Lena Headey on *Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles,* and later reunited with Whedon for a brief arc on *Dollhouse*.
She continued to fortify her genre resume with roles on *The Cape*, *Alphas*, and *Arrow*. Her last acting credit was two episodes of Netflix’s *Wu Assassins *in 2019.
Glau married Val Morrison, whom she met on the set of *Hawaii Five-0*, in 2014. They share two daughters.
Sean Maher (Simon Tam)

Sean Maher played Simon, the ship's doctor and River's supportive big brother.
He formed such close friendships with the cast that he admitted to EW in 2011 that his one real regret was not coming out to them as gay at the time.
“These are some of the most amazing people who are still like family to me," he said. “I was so unhappy and lonely, and to come to work every day with that group was wonderful.”
The New Yorker took on the role of Don John in Whedon’s snappy film adaptation of *Much Ado About Nothing *(2012), and has otherwise appeared on *The Playboy Club*, *Looking*, *The Mentalist*, and *9-1-1*.
He and his husband, Paul, got married in 2016, and are raising a son and a daughter together.
Ron Glass (Shepherd Book)

Every ragtag crew of mercenaries needs a man of God, and the *Firefly* gang got theirs in the form of Shepherd Book. Played by Ron Glass, the character also has something of a mysterious past — including friends and foes in high places.
Few cast members embraced the show’s devoted fandom as much as Glass.
"The *Firefly* and *Serenity* fans are just unbelievable. They are so loyal and supportive and enthusiastic. They have just kept me soaring,” he said in a 2013 interview. “[Book] turned into one of the most loved characters I ever played… When the show ended I was really moved, emotionally."
Of course, Glass was no stranger to television. By far the most accomplished actor of the main cast at the time, he spent eight years as one of the stars of *Barney Miller*, landing an Emmy nomination for his performance.
He remained in demand for decades, and followed *Firefly* with appearances on *Shark *and Whedon’s Marvel spinoff *Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D*.
Like his character, the Indiana native was actively religious, though he was Buddhist rather than Christian.
Glass died of respiratory failure in 2016 at age 71.
