A woman will receive a special award after she saved her husband’s life when they were both struck by lightning while hiking.
Eva Broderick and her then-boyfriend were on a 10-mile hike in the Kettle Moraine State Forest in Wisconsin on Aug. 9, 2025, when a storm moved in, according to NBC affiliate WTMJ.
The couple was just over two miles away from their car when Nick said rain started falling “out of nowhere.”
A short time later, lightning struck a nearby tree, causing the couple to be impacted by a ground current.
“All I remember was being curled in a fetal position with my hands over my ears, screaming, I think, and feeling what can only be described as electricity in my feet,” Eva recalled.
Eva then looked over at Nick, and said he was “laying on his back” with his eyes “half open” and “glazed over,” according to WTMJ. He was blue in the face and “not breathing,” she added.
That’s when Eva said she called 911. However, she struggled to give out her location as her cell phone signal repeatedly dropped.

Then, Eva turned her attention to Nick and had to revive him twice using CPR, according to WTMJ.
“I’ve made the joke quite a few times that he can’t leave me,” Eva said. “I brought him back from death, so he’s kind of stuck with me.”
It took 50 minutes for rescue crews to reach the couple on foot, according to WTMJ.
Nick was later taken to a hospital, where he spent three days recovering. He sustained some hearing loss in one ear and still deals with some tendon issues.
After he was released from the hospital, Nick proposed to Eva, and they wed in August. “We wanted to rewrite August and make it a better month,” Nick said.
Meanwhile, Eva will soon be honored with the Lifesavers Award at the Palmyra Fire Department for saving her husband’s life.
